Consumer Unit Replacement Leicester

Why Upgrade Your Consumer Unit?

A modern consumer unit makes your home safer and more reliable. If your lights trip often, you’ve still got rewireable fuses, or your board doesn’t have RCD/RCBO protection, an upgrade can dramatically reduce the risk of electric shock and nuisance tripping. We install to the latest 18th-edition standards, include surge protection where appropriate, label every circuit clearly, and provide your Electrical Installation Certificate on completion.

Key Benefits at a Glance

  • Shock protection with modern RCD/RCBO technology

  • Installed to BS 7671 (18th Edition) standards

  • Surge Protection (SPD) available to protect appliances

  • Clear circuit labelling and tidy finish

  • Full testing & EIC provided, Part P notification handled

  • Local, fully insured Leicester team with fast lead times

We’re fully insured and committed to clear communication and fair pricing. Whether it’s a single socket or a full rewire, your home is in safe hands.

Do I Need an Upgrade?

Common signs: frequent tripping, no RCD protection, old rewireable fuses, scorch marks or brittle cables at the board, additions/extensions without spaces left, failed/coded items on an EICR.

Why new boards are safer

Modern consumer units use MCBs and RCDs/RCBOs.

  • MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker): protects the wiring if there’s an overload or short-circuit, tripping to stop overheating.

  • RCD/RCBO (Residual Current protection): constantly monitors for leakage to earth and cuts the power very quickly if a fault is detected—reducing the risk of electric shock and helping to prevent electrical fires caused by earth faults.
Every board we install includes RCD/RCBO protection to current BS 7671 (18th Edition) standards, with clear labelling and full testing.

Before upgrading your consumer unit, we may recommend an electrical installation condition report (EICR) to identify any underlying issues with your wiring before the new board is fitted.

Not sure? We’ll assess and give clear options—no pressure.

Consumer Unit Replacement FAQs

Q) Will a new consumer unit make my home safer?
A) Yes. Modern boards use RCD/RCBO protection that rapidly cut power in fault conditions, reducing the risk of electric shock and electrical fires. We also include clear labelling, optional SPD (surge protection), and full testing before handover.

Q) How do I know if I need an upgrade?
A) Common signs: frequent tripping, no RCDs, old rewireable fuses, scorch marks/brittle cables around the board, or EICR codes (C1/C2/FI). Not sure? We’ll check and give honest advice with a clear plan.

Q) What is an RCD?
A) An RCD (Residual Current Device) constantly compares the electricity flowing out on the live with the electricity returning on the neutral. If any current “leaks” to earth — for example through a person or a damaged cable — it cuts the power in a fraction of a second (domestic devices are typically rated at 30 mA for additional protection). This rapid disconnection reduces the risk of fatal electric shock and can help prevent electrical fires caused by earth faults. Modern consumer units use RCDs or RCBOs (RCD + MCB per circuit) as standard, and we test them on installation and show you how to use the test button.  RCDs explained in more detail on consumerunitworld.co.uk  here

Q) How long does the job take and will I be without power?
A) Most homes are same-day. Power is off during the changeover (typically a few hours). We plan ahead, protect floors, and keep you updated so disruption is minimal.

Q) Do you certify the work?
A) Absolutely. You receive a full Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) and Part P building-control notification. Everything is completed to BS 7671 (18th Edition) standards.

Q) What’s included in the price?
A) New 18th-edition consumer unit (Hager or equivalent), RCBO or dual-RCD setup (we’ll advise what’s best), optional SPD, tidy install with circuit schedule, full testing, certification, and a 12-month workmanship warranty. No hidden extras.

Q) Can you fix existing faults found during the upgrade?
A) Yes—we’ll identify issues during testing and talk you through options. Simple fixes can often be completed the same day; larger issues are quoted clearly before any work proceeds.

BTW “18th edition” refers to BS 7671 – the UK Wiring Regulations that set safety rules for electrical installations. A modern consumer unit is designed and installed to this standard (latest: BS 7671:2018 + A3:2024), covering shock protection, RCD/RCBO use, and surge protection guidance. Learn more on the IET’s BS 7671 page.
